今週の最大のニュースはなんと言ってもSpaceXによる初の民間宇宙ミッションInspiration 4の打上げでしょう。費用は2億ドル（220億円）とも噂されていますが、全額をスタートアップの創業者Jared Isaacmanが全額負担し、無料招待で他の３名が同乗しています。テネシー州のセント・ジュード研究小児病院への2億ドルの寄付を募るためのミッションとしており、（打上費用以外に）1億ドルは自らが支払うとしています。招待された人は、同病院の元患者で、がんサバイバーかつ義足を履いている、過去の全ての宇宙飛行士で最年少となる医療スタップの女性、コミュニティカレッジの教師をする黒人女性、元空軍兵でLockheed Martinのエンジニアの男性と大変ダイバーシティに富んでいます。フライトはJaredの強い要請で、Dragon宇宙船として最高高度575キロを飛行しています。お金を出せば誰でも宇宙に行ける時代になったのも素晴らしいですが、金持ちの道楽と非難されないようい周到にデザインされたミッションはよく考えられていると感じます。ドキュメンタリーはNetflixで放映が始まっています。

The biggest news of the week was the launch of SpaceX's first commercial space mission, Inspiration 4. Rumored to cost $200 million, the entire cost was paid in full by the startup's founder, Jared Isaacman, with three others riding along by free invitation. The mission is to raise $200 million donation for St. Jude's Research Children's Hospital in Tennessee, and $100 million (in addition to launch costs) will be paid by himself. The invitees are very diverse: a former patient of the hospital, a cancer survivor, prosthetic leg wearer and the youngest medical staple of any astronaut ever, a black woman who teaches at a community college, and a former Air Force soldier and Lockheed Martin engineer. The flight was at Jared's insistence, flying at an altitude of up to 575 kilometers as the Dragon spacecraft's highest. It's great that we live in an age where anyone with money can go to space, but I feel that the carefully designed mission is well thought out so that it won't be accused of being a rich man's hobby. The documentary is now airing on Netflix.
